All Hallows’ School QLD, Australia (2019)

The landscape architecture team from Wilson Architects designed several ‘places in the landscape’ for one of Brisbane’s most historic sites – All Hallows’ School.

The all-girls school was established in 1861 and is home to some of Queensland’s oldest buildings.

Street Furniture Australia seats and tables are included in this 2019 Queensland AILA Landscape Architecture Award winning project.

The brief was to maintain the pastoral quality of the school and its river views.

The AILA award judges said Wilson Architects’ design “amplifies the site’s prime inner-city position, while continuing the architectural language of the firm’s recent works at the school.”

Jury members applauded the “subtly and charm of these places which honour the site’s historic setting,” while “supporting its current and future pedagogical objectives.”

“The spaces demonstrate a sophisticated curation of texture and scale, celebrating both fine grain heritage detail and uninterrupted river and city vista,” they said.

“A robust, high quality material palette underpins this agile landscape, which connects and integrates both contemporary and heritage built form with flare.”

Existing Classic Plaza Tables with Classic Galleria Slim Benches are included in two new outdoor spaces.

Students can work at table settings in the reimagined Catherine Court, and in a new place known as Kirinari – an indigenous word meaning ‘place of learning.’

Petersham PS Outdoor Classroom

Petersham Public School has created a Sustainable Outdoor Learning Area to provide students and teachers with open-air classrooms and opportunities to connect with the environment. The project was driven by the school and P&C towards a vision of sustainable and environmental stewardship, and complements outdoor learning activities already in place such as a chicken coop, herb and vegetable garden cared for by students. There are four new outdoor areas: a Garden Classroom, Library Lawn, The Link and Secret Native Garden, which Principal Hugh Miller says together will enhance the school’s teaching and learning programs. “It enables us to link and embed a range of curriculum areas: English, Maths, Science and Technology, Geography, History, PDHPE and Creative Arts,” he says. “All of those disciplines can come together in new, interesting, and …

Randwick Public School

Part of the NSW Government’s $6 billion school upgrade project, the $14.5 million redevelopment of Randwick Public School features landscaped areas for passive play and outdoor learning. The design places a strong emphasis “on creating outdoor learning environments to provide students with a diverse range of teaching spaces, making the new school a fun and exciting place to be,” says TKD Architects. Relocating some existing elements allowed the school to retain “an integral outdoor learning area,” adds Hamish Dounan, Design Director with Context Landscape Architects. “The existing landscape elements provide shaded and quiet learning nodes for students using the library, while a play garden offers a more sensory outdoor learning environment,” he says. “While limited in scope for major changes of the school, the combination of a well thought out …

Homebush West Public School

A largely vertical school, the Homebush West campus underwent a $30 million upgrade including new buildings, a rooftop playground and improved amenities in its surrounding spaces. This included refurbishing and expanding the Covered Outdoor Learning Area, to suit “future focused learning,” say architects TKD. Additionally, they say, “critical to the design of this project is the use of the roof space of the building for active and passive play space. These new learning facilities are designed to meet with the school’s aspirations for contemporary pedagogy.” Context Landscape Architects have specified a range of tailored Street Furniture Australia benches, with straight and curved for the rooftop playground, and circular for the ground level. Combining the curved and straight benches forms diverse spaces for the rooftop space, says Context Design Director Hamish Dounan, …
