Ku-ring-gai Council commissioned tailored Frame Bin Enclosures for the St Ives Showground featuring a special laser cut horse design, to honour the equestrian community who have used the site as far back as the 1920s.
“Show and horse events were held regularly from 1926 until the Second World War, when it was occupied by the Australian Defence Forces,” says Nick Zajko, Landscape Architect with Ku-ring-gai Council.
“The Princess Anne Equestrian Arena in the Showgrounds is used today as an equestrian facility for training and competition days with show-jumping, sporting, dressage and horsemanship events.
“The site holds the annual Northern Suburbs Agricultural and Horticultural Society Show, which commenced in 1975. The society also stages Twilight, Winter and Spring Horse Shows at the Showground across the year.”
Each of the 10 tailored Enclosures features an angled roof, laser cut door and frame powder coated in Dark Bronze with scratch-resistant Textura coating.
The horse graphic was designed inhouse by Ku-ring-gai Council.
“The value of having custom pieces made is it allows a site’s identity or genius loci to show through within its infrastructure. This site is located in a rustic bushland setting and we wanted the bin frames to reflect this,” says Zajko.
“The rusty corten face panel picks up on the laterite soil, tree sap and browning eucalyptus leaf colours on site.
“The mini orb side panelling celebrates the historic building materials found on site, and the powder coated bronze frame subtly ties all these elements together and allows the bins to harmonise with the surrounding site context.”
