A custom furniture suite, designed by Emerge Associates and supplied by Street Furniture Australia, enhances places to relax and watch the action at URBNSURF Melbourne, a multi-million dollar urban surf park at Melbourne Airport.
URBNSURF Melbourne’s 2.2 hectare surfing lagoon is powered by Wavegarden Cove technology that generates ocean-like surfing waves of between 0.5 and 2 metres in height, for surfers of all abilities. The lagoon can accommodate up to 84 surfers per hour across four surfing zones.
The surf park also includes an academy, rental store, lagoonside hot tubs and daybeds, and landscaped open spaces. Three Blue Ducks Melbourne restaurant and bar is planned to open at the park in 2020.
“We’re delighted with the beautifully-designed, hard wearing and natural furniture that was manufactured by Street Furniture Australia for URBNSURF Melbourne.
“Our members and guests love relaxing lagoonside on our sun loungers, and our alfresco table settings enable surfers to share their stories over a drink or bite to eat, and enjoy stunning views of perfect waves,” said Rupert Partridge, URBNSURF’s Brand and Marketing Manager.
The bespoke furniture range was designed by Chad Elton, Senior Landscape Architect with Emerge Associates.
“The intent of the furniture design was to provide a resort-style experience matching the unique style and materials of the built form. The furniture had to deliver on being hard-wearing yet moveable to cater for the broad ranging facility user groups, activities and events,” says Chad.
“We provided Street Furniture Australia with our vision and preliminary construction designs for the furniture and were able to work with their design team to resolve construction methodology and final material selections to ensure the desired outcome and budgets were achieved.”

More than 20 single and double sun loungers, 12 side tables and 10 settings have been installed. Each furniture piece features Pacific Teak battens and hot dipped galvanised frames powdercoated in Night Sky.
The sun loungers are adjustable for the ideal angle.
Harris HMC Construction delivered the project’s amenity buildings and landscaping.
URBNSURF Melbourne opened in January 2020 to an enthusiastic reception. Despite being temporarily closed in April and May 2020 to keep guests and staff safe from COVID-19, the company re-opened the park on June 19th and is “thrilled to have perfect waves pumping again in Tullamarine.”
