UNSW Sense of Place Project

The University of NSW Industrial Design program, in conjunction with Street
Furniture Australia held a design competition as part of the students’ Sense of
Place design studio class.

The brief was to design the next generation of public outdoor furniture. Ten top projects were shortlisted by university staff and their designs submitted to be
judged by an expert panel from Street Furniture Australia.

After a long and gruelling discussion, a unanimous decision was reached and
Street Furniture Australia would like to congratulate the following students for
their innovative and practical designs.

Street Furniture Australia will continue to support the UNSW Industrial Design

Western Sydney train stations kickstart prototype ‘Power Spots’

Street Furniture Australia has designed and built prototype charging stands as part of a Transport for NSW program to deliver free phone chargers at 15 Sydney train stations. Developed by Street Furniture Australia’s inhouse industrial designers in collaboration with Transport for NSW, the prototypes offer wireless, USB-A and USB-C charging, and can power 7 devices at once. They were built at the Street Furniture Australia factory in Western Sydney. Two Power Spots are now installed at Liverpool and Campbelltown stations. The $1 million Power Spots Project rollout to 15 transport hubs including Bankstown, Hurstville, Lidcombe, Penrith, Wynyard, Central, Town Hall and Bondi Junction will be completed by late 2024. Camerer hatches winning seat

Landscape architect Nicholas Camerer, from Fremantle’s Ecoscape in Western Australia, is the winner of the first Intergrain Urban Timber Project. Graduates and students pitched their designs for a functional piece of urban furniture for a community garden in Werribee Park, Victoria; a supportive cross-cultural hub for locals and Karen refugees. The challenge: to find imaginative ways to use timber in a seat that invites the community to come together. Josh Flowers wins SFA student design competition

Josh Flowers, a second-year student in bachelor of industrial design at UNSW, is the winner of the 2013 Sense of Place design competition. The competition is a collaboration between Street Furniture Australia and the university’s industrial design program. The Sense of Place brief challenged the students to consider the theory of ‘placemaking’ in urban design, says Dr Mariano Ramirez, a senior lecturer in industrial design at UNSW “This is essentially about giving people a reason to stop and become involved in a public space,” he says. The New York City High Line
