Our Flower Chair prototypes were on show at the National Gallery for the 2016 NIMBY International Festival of Landscape Architecture.

Delegates were invited to post selfies with a Flower Chair on the Street Furniture Australia Facebook page for a chance to win $200 worth of Interflora flowers for a loved one.

The winning photo, which achieved the most Facebook likes, belongs to Sheila Nolan from Western Australia – congratulations, Sheila!

A Registered Landscape Architect, Sheila is Treasurer of AILA in Western Australia.

“I’d like to give the gift of a flower arrangement to my Granny who turns 93 in a week’s time so it’s perfect timing for her – she particularly loves roses,” she says.

“Her name is Rosalie and is my only surviving grandparent so is very special to me.”

The Flower Chair will be released in 2017.

#BackyardExperiment at Garema Place

Street Furniture Australia also invited visitors to #BackyardExperiment in Garema Place to post selfies with the park to our Facebook page, to win a David Jones gift card worth $200.

We just couldn’t decide between two of the photographs, so Catherine Gottlieb‎ and Danielle Dries are our joint winners, and will each receive a $100 gift card.

Danielle’s selfie achieved the most likes:

And Catherine’s photo shows one of our aims for the pop up park – to bring more families to Garema Place – happening right there with icecream on top:

We wish Garema Place could stay like that too, Catherine.

It’s been an exciting month, congratulations to all our winners and many thanks to those who entered.

Flower Chair Selfie Contest

Delegates burst from conference sessions onto the lawn of the National Gallery to find swivelling Flower Chairs waiting for a road test. The Flower Chair is designed by former UNSW student Joshua Flowers, inspired by inclusive seating at Google. It is fixed yet movable, and can be powdered coated in bright colours for dramatic effect. Street Furniture Australia reps invited festival goers to provide feedback on the prototypes for their first public appearance. We hope to feature new product prototypes at future industry events. Selfies with the Flower Chairs popped up on the Street Furniture Australia Facebook page for a chance to win $200 worth of Interflora flowers for a loved one. #BackyardExperiment

***** Click here for final results of #BackyardExperiment ***** #BackyardExperiment is our most ambitious research project yet. Collaborating with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, Street Furniture Australia will attempt to activate Garema Place in Canberra through a pop-up park and 60 movable seats. Garema Place was a cosmopolitan hotspot in the sixties and seventies, but has since become a deserted thoroughfare. The open space is largely concrete and underused, however, it is surrounded by great cafes, shops and workplaces. Over a ten-day period, time-lapse cameras will observe how people interact with the park and furniture elements. The first two days will examine no activation, the next four days will observe activities with park and furniture elements only, and the final four days will discover what happens with full activation, which includes …

Flower Chair to make festival debut

As the International Festival of Landscape Architecture approaches, Street Furniture Australia is gearing up to release prototypes of the fixed, yet movable, Flower Chair. Last month StreetChat brought you our White Paper on the movable seat, exploring how public spaces become more inviting with the ability to decide your position. Flower Chair is a novel approach to the movable seat that is fixed to the ground, yet allows sitters to adjust their outlook. The seat will swivel 360 degrees, empowering sitters to look for the best view, interact with neighbours or enjoy some solo time, and change their position in relation to the sun. Fixed at the base, it provides an opportunity for placemakers to experiment with movable seating, with the added peace of mind that their assets cannot ‘walk’. …
